- Marketing automations enable you to automatically send emails to customers when specific events happen or you want to reach a specific subset of your email database
- Marketing automations use workflows from Shopify Flow to trigger when an email message is sent to customers
- Automations can be configured using a template, or you can create a custom automation
- You can choose which type of marketing automation to create based on the type of email message you want to have sent
- Marketing automations use Shopify email to send email messages to customers, except for the Custom marketing automations and 3rd-party automations,
- Email messages that are sent because of automations, other than the abandoned cart automation, count towards your “emails sent” count with Shopify email
Create a Marketing Automation
- When creating a marketing automation from a template, you can configure the specific details of how the automation works
- i.e. you can change how long after a customer abandons a cart that the abandoned cart email is sent
- After you configure an automation, you can turn it on immediately, or you can save it as a draft
- To get started, go to the navigation of your Shopify admin, click Marketing, and then Automations

- In the top right corner, click on the Create Automation button

- Select the Automation you’d like to use. The available options are:
- Abandoned checkout
- Abandoned cart
- Abandoned product browse
- Welcome new subscriber
- First-purchase upsell
- Customer winback
- Custom marketing automations
- 3rd party automations

- Choosing an automation will bring up the following modal, where you can choose to turn on the selected automation directly, or modify it by clicking on the Edit button

- Hitting the Edit button will show two options: Edit email and Edit workflow
- Edit email will take you to the template editor, where you can customize the email that will be sent out when customers meet the criteria outlined in the automation
- Edit workflow lets you customize the criteria and parameters of the automation itself
- Once you are finished with both the automation workflow and the email template, make sure everything is saved
- Then, hit the Turn on workflow button to activate the automation

Turn a marketing automation off:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Marketing > Automations
- In the Automations section, click the automation that you want to turn off
- Click Turn off automation, and then click Turn off
- NOTE: Any workflows that are in a wait stage are canceled so no further emails are sent as part of the automation
